2、inlarge-scaleornetworkedenvironmentalsofacesmanychallenges.Onecommongroundofallthisfingerprintbasedpersonalauthenticationsystemsisthenecessityforestimationoffingerprintridgeorientation.Theimportanceofridgeorientationcanbedeflectedfromthefactthatitisinevitablyusedfordetecting,de
3、scribingandmatchingfingerprintfeaturessuchasminutiaeandsingularpoints.Usingtheridgeorientation,notonlytheerrorratescanbeimproved,butalsomoreefficientimagecompressionandaspeedupindatabasequeriescanbeachieved.Inthisthesisweproposeanovelmethodforfingerprintridgeorientationmodeling
4、usingwavelettranslation.Ourproposedmodeldoesnotrequirepriorknowledgeofsingularpoints.andcanbefittedindifferentwaveletscales.Solvetheproblemaboutsmoothingorientationdatawhilepreservingdetailsinhighcurvatureareas,especiallyaroundsingularpoints.AnothercharacteristicofthemodelisCom
5、binestheadvantagesofparametricandnon-parametricmodelofthefingerprintorientation.Addtheregularizationtermtotheoptimizationalgorithm,formingaWaveletbasedsmoothextensionmethodontheorientationfieldreconstruction.Startingfromtheviewpointofflexibletemplatesmodels,wedevelopamethodwhic
6、hconstraintstheincompletefingerprintorientationtoreconstructonlyinwaysastheyoccurinnature.Extensiveexperimentsusingafingerprintrecognitioncompetitiondatabasesforcomparativeexperiment.Wecanreportstatisticallysignificantimprovementsintheaccuracyoffingerprintreconstructionorientat
