3、mixtureofenergyefficiencyandrenewableenergysystems,donotsufficientlycontributetothecarbonemissionreductionswhicharenecessaryformeetingUKGovernmenttargetsandtoavoiddangerousclimatechange.Purchasingahometiespeopleintonotjustdirectconsumptionofenergy(heating
4、,hotwater,electricity),butalsoeffectsotherareasofconsumptionsuchastheembeddedenergyinthebuildingandactivitiesassociatedwiththelocationandthetypeofdevelopment.Conventionalbusinessmodelsfornewhousingdevelopment,operatingundercurrentgovernmentregulations,pol
5、iciesandtargetshavefailedtodevelophousingwhichencouragestheadoptionofsustainablelifestylestakingwholelifeconsumptionintoaccount.Analternativebusinessmodelofeco-self-buildcommunitiesisproposedasawaytofosterdesiredbehaviorchange.Thefeasibilityofeco-self-bui
6、ldcommunitiesandtheirscopeforsupportinglowcarbonsustainablelifestylesisassessedthroughstakeholderinterviews,andthroughquantitativeassessmentofcosts,carbonemissionreductionpotential,andothersustainabilityimpactsoftechnicalandlifestyleoptionsandtheircombina
7、tions.Theresearchshowsthateco-self-buildcommunitiesarebothfeasibleandhavetheabilitytodeliverlowcarbonlifestyles.Incomparisontoconventionalapproachestobuildingnewhousing,theyhavefurtheradvantagesintermsofdeliveringwidersocial,environmentalaswellaseconomics
