4、vedfromMadridbyhisfather,whohadjustobtainedtheappointmentofProfessorofGreekattheInstituteofMurcia.ItwasinMurciathatJose*receivedtherudimentsofhiseducationandwhile;stillachildheenteredtheinstitute.HerehestudiedLatinunderProfessorSoriano,NaturalHistoryunderAngelGirao,andGreekunderhisownfather.Theb
5、oywasearlyseentobegiftedwithbrain-powerofthefirstorder.Andbeingofadocileandamiablenature,ofactiveandlaborioushabits,havingthe6josECHEGARAY:advantageofexcellenttutors,andbeingunderthesupervisionofakindandculturedfather,itishardlytobewonderedatthathisprogressinlearningwasgreatandrapid.Fromthefirst
6、hedisplayedthatwhichhasnevergrowncoolpassionformathematicsinhimthroughoutlife.Hisinterestinliteratureitselfwasfarfromabsorbing.Heshowed,indeed,somelikingfornovelsandromanticdramas.FortragicwritersofthestampofCorneilleandRacinehecouldnotconcealhisdisrelish,thoughthefairnessofhismindwouldneverperm
