3、ldrenunder5yearsdie,mostofthemfromcauseswhichcouldbepreventedforjustafewUScentsperchild.Theydielargelybecauseofworldindifference,butmostofalltheydiebecausetheyarepoor. Inthetimeittakestoreadthissentence,somewhereintheworldababyhasdiedititsmothersarms.Forthatmother,themessagethatherneighbou
4、r'sinfantwillliveisnoconsolation.Itdoesnotstemhergrieftoknowthat8outof10childrenintheworldhavebeenvaccinatedagainstthefivemajorkillerdiseasesofchildhood,orthatgloballysince1980infantmortalityhasfallenby25%,whileoveralllifeexpectancyhasincreasedbymorethan4years,toabout65years. Beneaththehea
5、rteningfactsaboutdecreasedmortalityandincreasinglifeexpectancy,andmanyotherundoubtedhealthadvances,lieunacceptabledisparitiesinhealth.Thegapsbetweenrichandpoor,betweenonepopulationgroupandanother,betweenagesandbetweenthesexes,arewidening.Formostpeopleintheworldtodayeverystepoflife,frominfan
6、cytooldage,istakenunderthetwinshadowsofpovertyandinequity,andunderthedoubleburdenofsufferinganddisease. Formany,theprospectoflongerlifemayseemmorelikeapunishmentthanagift.Yetbytheendofthecenturywecouldbelivinginaworldwithoutpoliomyelitis,aworldwithoutnewcasesofleprosy,aworldwithoutdeathsfr
