3、ggeststhatitemsoflanguageintotalisolationhavenofunction;theyneedasystemandasettingtogivethembothfunctionandmeaning.Childrenoftenaskforthemeaningofawordinisolation,withoutseeingtheneedtoprovideanythingforit;tooquickandtoocasualareplycanoftenhaveunexpectedconsequences.eg.Whenthechildaskswhatcric

5、context.InHalliday’sopinion,thesituationalcontextsincludethesetting,thewayoftalking,andparticipants.ButHymesdividesitintoeightelements:setting,role,function,notion,style,stressandintonation,grammar,vocabularyandlanguageaids.Thosefactorsaffecteachotheranddecidewhichlanguageformisappropriate.The

6、situationalcontextandsocioculturalcontextcan’tbeisolatedfromeachother.Incertainsocioculturalcontext,peoplemustobeytheparticularcommunicativeruleswhentheyuseacertainlanguage.Andinacertainsituationalcontext,peopleshouldnotonlypayattentiontothesocialcommunicationrulesbutalsoadjustthemselvesaccord
