3、y,Towada,Aomori034,Japan(Received4October1996/Accepted16December1996)ABSTRACT.Threefelinecoronavirus(FCoV)isolatesKUK-H,M91-266,andM91-267wereexaminedtoelucidatetheirbiologicalandantigenicpropertiesaswellasdiseasepotentialincats.Immunestainingsofvirus-infected
4、cellsbyusingFCoVtype-specificmonoclonalantibodiesindicatedthattheirantigenicspecificitywasserotypeII.However,antigenicvariationsamongtheseserotypeIIFCoVsweredetectedbyneutralizationassaywithhyperimmuneantiseraagainstFCoVsandcaninecoronaviruses,andwithexperimen
5、tallyinfectedcatsera;thereweretwosubtypesinserotypeIIFCoVs.Theisolatesefficientlygrewinfcwf-4cellcultureshowinglyticCPEenoughtoformdistinctplaques;whenmeasured48hrafterinfection,plaquesizesofbothM91-266andM91-267wereapproximately1mmindiameter,andamixtureofsmal
6、l(lessthan1mmindiameter)andlarge(approximately3mmindiameter)plaqueswereproducedinthecaseofKUK-H.StrainsKUK-H,M91-266andM91-267producedfelineinfectiousperitonitis(FIP)in50%,67%and89%ofexperimentallyinoculatedkittens,respectively.Furthermore,80%ofthekittensinocu
7、latedwiththesmallplaqueformerofKUK-HdevelopedFIPaccompaniedbymoreprominentclinicalsignsaswellaspathologicalchangeswhencomparedwith28.6%ofkittensinoculatedwiththelargeplaqueformer.TheseresultssuggestthatserotypeIIFIPVsproducingsmallersizeofplaquesaremorevirulen
