5、andingoftheplaceofcultureinsecondandforeignlanguagepedagogy,theworkofMichaelByramhasplayedaprominentrole.Inthelate1980s,Byramobservedthatculturerepresents“hidden”curriculuminsecondandforeignlanguageteaching.Heindicatedthatlanguageteachingcanrarelytakeplacewithoutimplicitlyteachingthecultu

6、reofitsspeakersbecauselanguageinvariablyreferstotheirknowledgeandperceptionsoftheworld,theconceptsofcultureandculturelearning.Byramalsopointedoutthatcommunicativecompetenceinvolves“appropriatelanguageusewhich,inpartatleast,isculturespecific”(Byram61).Inpractice,theimportanceofteachingfore
