2、ativelanguage.Influencedbytheirmothertongue,Chinesetranslatorsoftenusesomeawkwardexpressions,whichdonotexistinEnglish,inthetranslatedtexts.ThispaperaimstoexplorehowacomparablecorpuscanbeappliedinChinese-EnglishtranslationtoassistnativeChinese-speakingtransl
3、atorstomaketheirtranslatedtextssoundnaturaltonativeEnglishspeakers.Toillustratethepoint,acomparablecorpusonthesubjectofcityintroductionisconstructed.Withthehelpofcomparablecorpusanalysistools,sentencelength,lexicaldensity,andotherstatisticswhichcanreflectth
4、estylisticfeaturesofthetranslatedtextsarederived.Itisarguedthatacomparablecorpuswhichcanprovideexamplesofnaturalexpressionsinthetargetlanguageplaysanirreplaceableroleinterminologyextraction,awkwardcollocationspottinganditisalsocanpickupsomesmallerrorswhicha
5、reoftenneglectedbynon-nativeEnglish-speakingtranslatorssuchastheusageofarticles.Introductionntermsoftheprerequisitesoftranslators,theidealcandidateswouldbethenativespeakersofthetargetlanguage.ThisguidelineisfollowedbymanytranslationagenciesforInternationali
6、nstitutes.ItisalsoclearlystatedintheOccupationalOutlookHandbookoftheU.S.DepartmentofLaborthatthenatureoftranslationisforthetranslatorstoputtheirsecondary,orpassivelanguageintotheirnative,oractivelanguage.However,thisisnotthecaseinChinese-Englishtranslation.
7、AccordingtoXuMeijiang(2004),aseniortranslatorinChina'sCentralTranslationBureau,thoughsomequalifiednativeEnglish-speakingtranslatorsareinvolvedinC-Etranslating,editingorproofreading;largevolumesofC-EtranslationsaredonebynativeChinese-speakingtranslatorsalone
8、.Thepresentsituationwillnotbechangedinthenearfuturefortworeasons:first,onlyalimitedpoolofqualifiednativeEnglish-speakingtranslatorsareavailable;second,thefeechargedbynativeEnglish-speakingtranslatorsis
