4、esthedifferencesinthebeliefsofprimary(elementary)classteachersabouttheroleofexpressioninvisualartseducation.Thefocusisontherelationshipbetweenprimaryteachers’implicittheories,andexpressionintheirvisualartslessons.‘Expression’here,referstothemanifestationofanindividualst
5、udent’sinterestsorviewsthroughvisualimages.Students’expressionoftheirpersonalresponsesthroughvisualimages,isacentralintendedoutcomeofthevisualartscurriculuminWesternAustralia(CurriculumCouncil,1998).Teachersdifferastowhethertheygiveexpressioninthevisualarts,highorlowpri
6、ority.Theymayseeitasafuturepotentialitydependentupontheacquisitionofartskills,techniquesandconcepts,orasaninnateability,whichshouldbeeithersafeguardedfromadultinterferenceorshapedbyadultintervention.Despitethesedifferences,teacherstendtounderstandtheirownteachingpractic
7、easacommonsensereactiontocertainimperatives,suchastheneedsofthestudents,thelimitationsofresources,thetime-constraints,andtheapparentlyself-evidentgoalsofeducation.Thepurposeofthisstudyistounderstandtheimplicitbeliefsthatunderlieteachers’largelynon-reflectivedescriptions
8、oftheirteachingpractice–beliefs“thataresubliminallyingestedasapartofgeneralorprogressionalsocialization....[an
