3、ABSTRACTIndailycommunication,thespeakersnormallyadheretoprogressivity,thatistosay,theymovefromoneelementtoahearablynextoneifnothingintervens.Ifsomethingviolatesthecontiguitybetweenthecurrentandthehearablynextaction,theprogressivityofatalkwillbehaltedanditsimportwillbe
4、examinedbytheparticipants.Amongvariouswaysofprogressivityinterference,theMandarinturn-prefacingbúshì,awordoftenusedfornegationakintotheEnglishno,canserveasapowerfuldevice.Scholarshavedonealargenumberofresearchaboutbúshìfromvarioussubjectareaslikesyntax,semanticsandpra
5、gmatics.Butamongthem,littleworkonbúshìhasbeendonefromtheperspectiveofConversationAnalysis(hereafterCA).Inthepresentresearch,aninvestigationoftheturn-prefacingbúshìinMandarinChinesewillbecarriedoutfromaconversational-analyticperspective.Thedatacollectedforthisresearchc
6、onsistof300-munitemundaneconversations,includingbothface-to-facetalkandtelephonecall.Withanintensiveanalysisofdata,first,itisfoundthattheturn-prefacingbúshìisusedtocompromisetheprogressivityoftalkandhumanactionforthesakeofachievingintersubjectivity.Thiscanbeaccomplish
7、edinthecontextofinitiatingarepair,haltinganongoingactionandshiftingbetweennon-seriousnessandseriousness.Second,anotherfunctionoftheturn-prefacingbúshìisthatofmanagingepistemicincongruenceinthesequenceofrespondingtoadvicegivingandinforming(ortelling)inordertoestablishe
