2、43400UPMSerdang,Selangor43300,Malaysiaemail:syedjav@yahoo.com,ramzias@yahoo.comAbstractThispaperpresentstheefficientuseofplatinumcatalystrutheniumwithintheanodeofaDirectMethanolFuelCell(DMFC).Thisisachievedbydepositingplatinumandrutheniumnano-particlesonthepre-refluxedmulti-walled

3、carbonnano-tubes(MWCNT).MWCNTsweresynthesizedusingtheChemicalVaporDeposition(CVD)withfloatingcatalysttechnique.Thesynthesizedcarbonnanotubes(CNT)wererefluxedin12MnitricacidtoproduceanchoringsitesonthesurfaceoftheCNT.Theplatinumandrutheniumnano-particleswereinaratioof(3:1).Thesepar

4、ticlesaredepositedonthesurfaceoftheCNTat60wt%byreductioninethyleneglycol.Transmissionmicrograph(TEM)andscanningelectronmicrograph(SEM)imagesshowthesuccessofthedepositionmethod.Keywords:DMFC,floatingcatalystCVD,multi-walledcarbonnano-tubes,platinum-rutheniumnano-particles.INTRODUCT

5、IONAfuelcellislikeanordinarybattery,providesDCelectricityfromtwoelectrochemicalreactions.Thesereactionsoccuratelectrodeswherethereactantsarecontinuouslyfed.Theanodeismaintainedbysupplyingafuel(e.g.methanol)whereasthepositivecathodeismaintainedbythesupplyofoxygenorair.Therearevario

6、ustypesoffuelcells.Typesoffuelcellsvarybythedifferentmaterialsusedtomaketheelectrolyte.Everytypeoffuelcellisspecificonitsownintermsofelectrolyteused,operatingtemperatureandapplication.Directmethanolfuelcell(DMFC),methanolisusedastheelectrolyte.DMFCisalowtemperaturefuelcellhencehas

7、apotentialtobeusedforportableandmobilepurposessimilartodailyusedbatteries.TheprincipleofDMFCistooxidizemethanoltocarbondioxideattheanodeandreduceoxygenandwateratthecathode.Thiselectrochemicalreactionproduces6electrons.Asectionaldiagramisshownbelow:Fig.1showstheoperatingprincipleso
