2、nacoarse-graineddistinctionbetweensenses(e.g,sentenceinthesenseofa`prisonsentence'vs.a`grammaticalsentence').Wereportonananalysisofmultiplesenseswithintwosense-taggedcorpora,SemcorandDSO.ThesecorporausedWord-Netfortheirsenseinventory.Wefoundsignificantlymoreoccurrencesofmultiple-sensesperdiscou

3、rsethanreportedin[Galeetal.92](33%insteadof4%).Wealsofoundclassesofam-biguouswordsinwhichasmanyas45%ofthesensesintheclassco-occurwithinadocument.Wediscusstheimplicationsoftheseresultsforthetaskofword-sensetaggingandforthewayinwhichsensesshouldberepresented.1IntroductionWhenawordappearsmorethan

4、onceinadiscourse,howoftendoesitappearwithadifferentmeaning?Thisquestionisimportantforseveralreasons.First,theinteractionbetweenlexicalsemanticsanddiscourseprovidesinformationabouthowwordmeaningsrelatetoalargercontext.Inparticular,theinteractionprovidesabetterunderstandingofthetypesofinferences

5、involved.Second,bylookingatwordsensesthatsystematicallyco-occurwithinadiscoursewegetabetterunderstandingofthedistinctionbetweenhomonymyandpolysemy(unrelatedvs.relatedwordsenses).Wordsensesthatco-occuraremorelikelytoberelatedthanthosethatarenot.Finally,
