2、eloftheerrorsinducedbydeviationsofionosphericdelaysfromthoseestimatedbytheplanarmodelusedbytheGPS-basedWideAreaAugmentationSystem(WAAS).Toafirstapproximationthenominalionosphericspatialnomdecorrelationofverticalequivalentsignaldelays,sdecorr,isroughlyconstantoverthewholeoftheWAASserv

3、icevolume.However,significantgainsmaybeachievedbynomincludingamoredetaileddescriptionofsdecorrasafunctionofvariousmetricssuchasgeomagneticlatitude,timeofday,aswellasthequalityoftheplanarfitascharacterizedbytheradius,relativecentroidofthefit,andthedensityofdelaydata.Wetakethefirststep

4、inthedevelopmentofthismoresophisticatedmodelbydeterminingwhichofthesenomparametersisbestsuitedforuseasametricfordeterminingsdecorr.Thisallowsustoconstructafirst-ordermodeloftheionosphericdecorrelationwhichdependsonthelocaldensityofionosphericpiercepoints.Ourpreliminarystudyindicatest

5、hatthisfirst-ordermodelwillresultinabetterthan20%reductioninthevaluesofbroadcastgridionosphericverticalerrors(GIVEs)withinthecoterminousUnitedStates.Wealsoobserveabetterthan50%reductionintripsoftheionosphericirregularitydetectorintheAlaskaregion,whichwillleadtosignificantimprovements
