3、activity,employment,taxrevenue,incomeandforeigncurrencyformanycountries,includingChina.InChina’sdevelopmenttowardsasocialistmarketeconomy,tourismandtravelhavebecomeastrategicindustry(Xiao,2006),withthecountrybecomingoneofthemostrapidlygrowingdestinationsasitmovesfro
4、maplannedtoamarket-driveneconomy,andwithtourismemergingasastrategicactivityforlocaldevelopment(Yang,Wall&Smith,2008).Despiteitsbelatedstart,accordingtotheWorldTourismOrganization(UNWTO,2004),by2020Chinaisexpectedtobethemostpopulartouristdestinationintheworld,receivi
5、ng210millionforeigntourists,andtohavethefourthhighestnumberofoutboundtourists,with100millionChinesetravellingabroad.Totalrevenuegeneratedbytourismwillbe8-11%oftheChineseGDP.ThefactisthatChina,withitshugesize,ancientcivilisation,longhistoryanddiversityofculturesandet
6、hnicities,possesseshighlydistinctivetouristresourcesthatarecharacterisedbytheirvariety,abundance,antiquityandexclusivity(Liu&Wall,2005).TheremaybenoothercountryintheworldlikeChina,withsomuchdiversityandsomanyuniqueplaceswithinitsborders,asithassomanylocalculturesand
7、ethnicities,customsandfolklores(Wang,1997).TourismhasbeenseeninChinaasacomplementarytoolwithwhichtofightpovertyincertainregions.Since1978,throughtheChinaNationalTourismAdministration(CNTA),theChinesegovernmenthasplayedanimportantroleinthisdirection.However,ithasnotm
