3、arealtimesystemsinceoutputresultsmustbeproducedinresponsetoinputconditionswithinaboundedtime,otherwiseunintendedoperationwillresult.1.HistoryThePLCwasinventedinresponsetotheneedsoftheAmericanautomotivemanufacturingindustry.Programmablelogiccontrollerswereinitiallyadopted
4、bytheautomotiveindustrywheresoftwarerevisionreplacedthere-wiringofhard-wiredcontrolpanelswhenproductionmodelschanged.BeforethePLC,control,sequencing,andsafetyinterlocklogicformanufacturingautomobileswasaccomplishedusinghundredsorthousandsofrelays,camtimers,anddrumsequenc
5、ersanddedicatedclosed-loopcontrollers.Theprocessforupdatingsuchfacilitiesfortheyearlymodelchange-overwasverytimeconsumingandexpensive,aselectriciansneededtoindividuallyrewireeachandeveryrelay.In1968GMHydramatic(theautomatictransmissiondivisionofGeneralMotors)issuedareque
6、stforproposalforanelectronicreplacementforhard-wiredrelaysystems.ThewinningproposalcamefromBedfordAssociatesofBedford,Massachusetts.ThefirstPLC,designatedthe084becauseitwasBedfordAssociates'eighty-fourthproject,wastheresult.BedfordAssociatesstartedanewcompanydedicatedtod
7、eveloping,manufacturing,selling,andservicingthisnewproduct:Modicon,whichstoodforMOdularDIgitalCONtroller.OneofthepeoplewhoworkedonthatprojectwasDickMorley,whoisconsideredtobethe"father"ofthePLC.TheModiconbrandwassoldin1977toGouldElectronics,andlateracquiredbyGermanCompan
