2、dgrowthrangesfrom2.8percent(knitwear)to38.2percent(synthetictextiles).Presently,Pakistanhasthetenthpositionamongexportersoftextileanditspositioniscontinuouslydecliningintermsofvalue.Chinaisearning$39bnatthetopandIndiawith$9bnisthefifth.FromJanuary2005onwards,thetextilebusinesswillbegove

3、rnedundertheagreementontextilesandclothing(ATQ)signedundertheauspicesofWorldTradeOrganization.TheTextileMonitoringBoard(TMB)isnowlookingaftertheimplementationofnewrulesofthetradethatoffersbothchallengesandopportunitiestothecountrieslikePakistan.ToenhancethecredibilityofPakistaniproducts

4、itneedstoadoptinternationalqualitystandards.PakistanstillhasalongwaytogoinobtainingcertificationsofISC-9000,ISO,14000andotherStandards.ArecentassessmentreportissuedbytheInternationalCottonAdvisoryCommitteepointsoutrisingtextilemillsconsumptionmainlyinChinawhichislikelytopushtradefigures

5、ofthecommoditytoarecordhigh."Internationalcottontradeisforecastatarecord8.4milliontonsin2005-06,"accountingfor34percentofprojectedworldproduction.ImportsbyChinaareexpectedtoaccountfor35percentofworldimportsthisyearcomparedwith20percentlastyear.Exportsfrommanycountriesareprojectedtoincre

6、ase,becauseofthedemandfromChinaandhighstocks.Itsaidthecottonplantedareawasestimatedat35.4millionhectaresduring2005-06with115millionbalesprojectedcottonproductionledbyChina,theUnitedStates,IndiaandPakistan.Pakistanislikelytoretainthefourthplaceamongcotton-producingcountries'thisseasonaft

7、erChina,theUnitedStatesandIndia.Thefederalagricultureministryearlierthisyearset12millionbalescottonproductiontarget,butinspiredbythepreviousyear'soutputtheauthoritiesincreasedthetargetto15million.Thecountryproducedarecord14.7millionbalesthisyearsupportedbybetterweatherandleastp
