4、houghhebecomealawyerafterschooling.Bythetimewhenhewas23yearsold(1809),hehadroamedEngland,Holland,FranceItalyandHudsonValley.LifeExperienceAftercollectingsufficientoriginalmaterialsforwritingandagoodpracticeofeditingajournal,heformedhisparticularpoliticalIde

5、aandwritingstyle.HebeganhisresearchesonAHistoryofNewYork,writtenunderthenameofDiedrichKnickerbocker.AHistoryofNewYorkcameoutin1809,thuswonhimwidepopularity.LifeExperienceWashingtonIrvingwasengagedtomarryMatildaHoffmann,whodiedonApril26,1809attheageof17.Irvi

6、ngneverbecameengaged,ormarriedanyone.In1815IrvingsailedagainforEngland.Thusbegantoremainabroadfor17years.LifeExperienceHesettleddowninasmallvillageandbeganthewritingofTheSketchBookThebookappearedseriallyintheyearsof1819—1820.ItestablishedIrving’sreputationa
