3、oanyonewhoisinterestedinunderstandingmoreaboutHongKongwillfindthisahandyreference.FromdefiningHongKongasaresidueofChineseculture,totakingforgrantedthatabonafideHongKongculturedoesexist,thestudyofHongKonghasgonethroughatremendouschange.Thechangeisreflectedintheproliferationo
4、finterestbydisciplinesfromhistorytoculturalstudies,aswellasintheinclusionofawiderangeofmaterialsdeemedacademicallyrelevant.EspeciallywhenthehandoverofHongKongin1997becameimminent,anurgencyindefiningaheunggongyan(xianggangren,or"HongKongpeople")identitypropelledtheanalysisof
5、socialandculturalphenomenainthisplacewhere"EastmeetsWest,"wheremetropolitaneityjuxtaposeswithparochialism,wherenationalismandindividualismgrowsimultaneously,wheretraditionsareconstantlynegotiatedandremade.IntheanthropologicalstudyofHongKong,researchhassteadilyaccumulatedsin
6、cethe1950s.Earlierworksfocusedonsuchorthodoxtopicsasfamily,lineageandclaninthevillage,andsawHongKongasashowcaseof"traditionalChina".Buttherewerealsoscholarswhobegantopayattentiontocomplexprocessesofurbanizationandsocio-economicdevelopmentofpost-warHongKong,leadingtoresearch
7、onsmallfamilyfirmsinthecityandethnicrelationsinfishingcommunities.Today,whilestudiesoffolkreligionsandritualsarestillvalid,anthropologistsfinditequallyimportanttoexplorepopularculture,genderpolitics,cybercommunities,andpost-colonialidentities.Webelievethatabibliographyofpas
