2、,cultureandlanguage.Inthispaper,somegeneralknowledgeaboutChineseidiomsisintroducedatfirst,suchasthedefinition,classificationofChineseidioms.ThensometranslationexamplesofChineseidiomsareanalyzedtoexplorewhichelementscouldresultinpragmaticfailures,andbasedonit,fivestrategiesarebroughtforwardfortheChin

5、eChineseidiomstranslation”fromtheperspectiveofpragmaticfailure.ChineseidiomsarewisdomofChinese,andidiomsareanimportantpartofthelanguageandcultureofsociety.ThetypicalChineseidiomaticexpressionsreferto“thelanguageitemswhicharehighlyboundupwithculture”(吴秋兰,2007:14).Chineseidiomsincludesetphrases,common
6、sayings,proverbs,two-partallegoricalsayingsandcolloquialism.Anappropriateuseofidiomswilladdvarietyandforcetoone’sverbalandwritingcommunication.Pragmaticfailure,ontheotherhand,wasfirstproposedbyEnglishJennyThomas.Hedefinespragmaticfailureas“theinabilitytounderstandwhatismeantbywhatissaid”(Thomas,1983
