3、eetiologyofself-injuryarelimited,currenttheoriessuggestthattheemotionallabilityobservedamongself-injuringadolescentsresultsfromcomplexinteractionsbetweenindividualbiologicalvulner-abilitiesandenvironmentalrisk.Forexample,deficienciesinserotonergicfunctioning,
4、inconjunctionwithcertainfamilyinteractionpatterns,maycontributetothedevelopmentofemotionallabilityandriskforself-injury.Theauthorsexploredtherelationbetweenperipheralserotoninlevelsandmother–childinteractionpatternsamongtypical(n21)andself-injuring(n20)adol
5、escents.Findingsrevealedhigherlevelsofnegativeaffectandlowerlevelsofbothpositiveaffectandcohesivenessamongfamiliesofself-injuringparticipants.Peripheralserotoninwasalsocorrelatedwiththeexpressionofpositiveaffectwithindyads.Furthermore,adolescents’serotoninlev
