4、thisman－IanKieman.Ianisagreatsailorandin1987hecompetedinanaround-the-worldyachtrace.Whenhewassailinginthisrace,hewasshockedatthepollutionintheworld’soceans.Therewasrubbishfloatingeverywhere.SowhenhegotbacktoSydneyhestartedorganizingaclean-updayforSydneyHarbour.In1989,40,000peop

5、levolunteeredtocleanuptheharbour.Theycollectedtonnesofoldcarbodies,plasticsofallkinds,glassbottlesandcigarettebutts.ItwassosuccessfulthatIanorganizedthefirstCleanUpAustraliaDay.Morethan300,000peoplevolunteeredtohelpthefirsttimeitwasheldin1990.AfterthatinMarch,everyyear,moreandm

6、orepeoplehelp.Here’satableshowingthemostcommonkindsofrubbishfoundin2001onCleanUpAustraliaDay.Youcanseethatthetopthreearecigarettebutts,glassbottlesandplasticbags.Asmuchoftherubbishaspossibleisrecycled－about20％－andtherestgoestorubbishtips.CleanUpAusturaliaDayworksverywell－therea

7、renowmanyplacesthatwon’tneedcleaningthisyearbecausethey’restillcleanfromthelastCleanUpDay.Infact,ithasbeensosuccessfulthatwenowhaveBusinessCleanUpDay,SchoolsCleanUpDay,aswellasCleanUpAustraliaDay.AfterhestartedCleanUpAustraliaDay,Ian’snextgoalwastotakehisideatotheworld.Hegotthe
