3、inmedia-effectsresearch.Basedonthisoverview,wehighlightafewkeydimensionsalongwhichonecancompare,framing,agendasetting,andpriming.Weconcludewithadescriptionofthecontextswithinwhichthethreemodelsoperate,andthebroaderimplicationsthattheseconceptualdistinctionshaveforthegrowthofou

4、rdiscipline.Parsimonyversusprecision:framing,agendasetting,andprimingThethreemodelswefocusoninthisissue—framing,agendasetting,andpriming—havereceivedsignificantscholarlyattentionsincetheywereintroduced.Agendasettingreferstotheideathatthereisastrongcorrelationbetweentheemphasis

5、thatmassmediaplaceoncertainissues(e.g.,basedonrelativeplacementoramountofcoverage)andtheimportanceattributedtotheseissuesbymassaudiences(McCombs&Shaw,1972).Asdefinedinthepoliticalcommunicationliterature,Primingrefersto‘changesinthestandardsthatpeopleusetomakepoliticalevaluatio

6、ns’(Iyengar&Kinder,1987,p.63).Primingoccurswhennewscontentsuggeststonewsaudiencesthattheyoughttousespecificissuesasbenchmarksforevaluatingtheperformanceofleadersandgovernments.Itisoftenunderstoodasanextensionofagendasetting.Therearetworeasonsforthis:(a)Botheffectsarebasedonmem

7、ory-basedmodelsofinformationprocessing.Thesemodelsassumethatpeopleformattitudesbasedontheconsiderationsthataremostsalient(i.e.,mostaccessible)whentheymakedecisions(Hastie&Park,1986).Inotherwords,judgmentsandattitudeformationaredirectlycorrelatedwith“theeaseinwhichinstancesoras
